I won’t lie, a very big, very real part of me would like to start this post off with some variation of “Good fucking riddance to 2025” on account of it many, many shitty happenings. But that would run somewhat counter to the pride I feel at everything we’ve managed to accomplish in spite of it all. Like, it would not be inaccurate to call 2025 the best year of BP Games’s existence to date across basically every metric OTHER than “geopolitical climate regarding porn and free speech”. So, bearing in mind the admittedly-mixed feelings I have towards this year, let’s go ahead and celebrate what we managed.

What with game development and newsletters and keeping the paysites active and doing various promotion tasks and doing the regular AAA web essays, it feels like it’s been ages since I’ve gotten to do any writing that’s Just For Me. So I thought, hey, why not shake off the cobwebs with a nice easy softball topic: sexual consent. Very little contentious or fraught about that!
Ideas of consent as they apply to pornographic video games have been on my mind for basically as long as I’ve been working on them, but they’re especially so in light of this summer’s pressure campaign by far-right fringe groups to pressure adult games from storefronts, the recent spate of nations and states instituting insane online verification schemes, attempted draconian crackdowns on free speech in the United States, and most recently Bluesky proposing to ban fictional depictions of non-consensual sex acts from their platform. All that kind of makes one think quite a bit about how their work is perceived!
Don’t take this to mean that I’m in any way interested in interrogating our work to discover if it meets a theoretical alt-Catholic Puritan’s standard of acceptability. It doesn’t, because it is porn, and to the kind of person who is invested in banning porn not only from the internet but from all aspects of society all porn is equally evil and equally deserving of eradication, and the more things that can be designated as pornographic for those purposes, the better. This is as true for porn that depicts explicitly-consensual missionary sex between two married cisgender heterosexuals that is exhaustively justified by a beautiful narrative as it is for porn that depicts snuff. Appeasement is death, and I’m not ready to die yet.
However, we’ve built up enough of a body of work at this point that I do think it’s worth looking at how our games approach sexual consent, along with some of my personal thoughts on how consent is deployed in stories like ours. Fair warning: in addition to frank discussions of explicit depictions of all manner of sex act, this post will also feature a decent amount of kimono-parting that might possibly lay bare our secret mix of herbs & spices. Consider yourself warned!

This is fifth of fourteen essays contained within the third issue of the Adult Analysis Anthology, a collection of longform writing that seeks to expand the breadth of critical discourse around adult games and adult game culture. If you’d like to support the creation of more high-quality writing about adult games the full anthology is available for purchase on Itch! Anthology logo by Pillow!

There is a good chance that if you are reading this essay, you have interacted with erotic games in the past, and perhaps have even willingly sought them out before. It’s a novel idea to be sure! But stay with me on this one: imagine that, after a good 10 or so minutes of sifting through dozens and dozens of games with off-putting titles and uncensored box art which clearly goes against itch.io TOS, you find something that you’re willing to click on so you can learn more about what it has to offer. Your eyes scan the list of features — fetishes, rather — and determine that yes, you’re still willing to take it for a spin. You then either download a build or load up the browser demo, double check that your door is locked while loosening your pants, and click to begin playing, only to be hit with an early cutscene where the protagonist is very clearly protesting the concept of having sex.
Oh, you think to yourself, these fictitious sexual acts I wanted to indulge in are being framed as assault and rape. Again.

On Endings
One of the more-frequent criticisms I see of Opportunity, and the one that I actually agree with the most, is that it doesn’t have a proper ending. For all the thought and care that went into the game, very little was spared for how I actually wanted to tie things off at the very end. My original vision for Opportunity had been to have it be a series comprised of very short “episodes” – I had about eight or nine sketched out in the initial concept document. This plan was changed after TinyHat got in touch about wanting to get the game on Steam, because that entailed combining the first three chapters into one so that the early-access version would have enough content to feel substantial. After that, we were just working as fast as we possibly could the whole time, with very little thought left over for long-term planning.
However, after two and a half years of working on the thing, it HAD to end. There simply wasn’t any more story to tell after chapter 5, not really. Such character arcs as there were had all completed, the whole cast was in a pretty good place, and introducing any new plot elements would have been akin to starting an entirely new story anyway. I could have just ended things right at the end of the big orgy in chapter 5, but I knew I needed to at least TRY to put a bow on everything.

You know how it is. Sometimes you want to write about something but the subject just doesn’t have the legs to be made into a full-length essay. Luckily, there are enough of those not-quite-essay-length topics left over for Opportunity that I think I can cobble them together into a proper post! Also, I apologize for the delay in getting this one out, but it turns out that launching a video game, and then launching a fundraiser for the next issue of your anthology, and then getting emergency gall bladder removal surgery all in the same one-month span can really throw a spanner in the works of your blogging schedule! Who knew!

Happy March, everyone! Here in Vancouver we’re starting to see flowers starting to poke up through the ground and blossoms starting to bud on the trees – in between our torrential spring rains. Big big big update today! Let’s get to it.
Monstrous Liberation Has Released!
As of this moment, right now, this very second, Monstrous Liberation, the new isekai-flavored monsterfucking sandbox adult visual novel from BP Games, the studio that brought you Opportunity: A Sugar Baby Story, is available to purchase on Steam and Itch!!! This is a day that’s felt as though it’s been a VERY long time coming for us, so we hope you’ll enjoy what our hard work has produced!
I’d like to be as blunt as possible for a moment: it is very important for us that the Monstrous Liberation launch go as well as possible. We are not currently supported by any form of crowdfunding; all of the work we do is funded solely by selling the things we make. Our financial resources are currently VERY tight – Pacha is not getting paid enough, and I’m not getting paid at all. We still use royalty-free photos as our scene backgrounds, and the game’s soundscape is all royalty-free music and sound effects. Having more money would allow us to bring part-time collaborators like Julian on to do more art would allow us to produce updates more quickly, and finish the game more quickly. Having more money would allow us to hire contractors to replace the royalty-free photos and music with bespoke assets. Having more money would allow us to pay Pacha what she’s worth and pay me, well, a little bit. I would like to be paid, even if it’s just a little bit.
If you’re a regular reader of the newsletter or the blog, I’m hoping that means you value the games we make, the anthologies I edit, and/or the writing I produce, and would like for some or all of that to continue happening. Assuming that’s the case, here are the ways you can help the Monstrous Liberation launch go as well as it can:
- Purchase the game (again, on either Steam or Itch) and leave a positive review (5 stars on Itch). THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU CAN DO. IT HAS AN OUTSIZED EFFECT ON OUR STOREFRONT VISIBILITY. The sooner the better, also – on launch day is best, but within the launch week at very least.
- Obviously, simply purchasing the game during the launch week is very helpful. Not as much as purchasing and leaving a positive review, but a lot depends on whether we can make it onto the Popular New Releases tab on Steam and the “Popular” tab of Itch’s “Adult” section (and how long we can remain there). Again, earlier is better here – purchasing on launch day is best!
- If you can’t purchase the game right now, no judgment! You can still help us a lot by endorsing the game and posting it in communities – Discord servers, forums, etc – where it might find fans. This could include communities based around porn, porn games, visual novels, comics, genre writing, or indie games (this is presuming those last ones are chill with adult content). Also, if you’re a regular viewer of any lewdtubers or adult game reviewers, asking them to play/cover Monstrous Liberation would be a huge help!
- Finally, sharing the posts I make about the game on Bluesky and Twitter is a perfectly-acceptable way to help out. Every little bit helps!
Once again, you can purchase (and, hopefully, leave a positive review for) Monstrous Liberation on Steam and Itch!

One would think that “showing when sex happens” would be the easiest part of creating any kind of pornographic material. At the end of the day that’s the POINT of the whole thing, right? To make a piece of art where sex takes centre stage? Yes, but that’s also what makes it difficult – it’s the part that’s most important to get right. When you’re making porn, and particularly when you’re making a porn GAME, there are a great number of things that you have to consider before you start slapping meat together. One thing to note at the top: although this segment does talk a fair amount about the decisions I made regarding the porn in Opportunity, it’s mixed in with much more general thoughts about porn and porn game development. Fair warning!

Fair warning up top: this portion of the retrospective will likely contain very few surprises if you’ve got an experience or familiarity with game development. It turns out that making video games is still making video games even when there’s porn in them! Nevertheless, I’m going to do my best to show you how a game like Opportunity might come together from start to finish (I’ll note that I’m also using a very similar flow for the updates on Monstrous Liberation, although obviously those aren’t EXACTLY analogous due to their differing story structure). I promise to also try my best to make it entertaining, though I’ll say up top what anyone who’s ever made a game knows: making games, even porn games, is pretty hard and boring almost all of the time. However, to paraphrase Defunctland‘s Kevin Perjurer: the only thing I hate worse than making a game is NOT making a game.

Happy February, everyone! It’s been a cold, miserable month here in Vancouver – sometimes, the nicest thing one can say about February is that at least it isn’t January. Let’s get to the update. (This update is crossposted from the monthly BP Games newsletter.)
